Sport

We aim to strike the balance between ‘sport for excellence’ and ‘sport for all’, encouraging a competitive spirit but with a strong emphasis on fair play and team work.  Throughout the year, all pupils – whatever their strengths – will represent Beeston in a team sport. Some of our children represent county and region, and many compete for their senior schools, sometimes nationally. Our aim, however, is for every child to leave Beeston with a sense of enjoyment and confidence in games-playing and the benefit of physical activity for life.

Each year group is timetabled to have Games each day and one Physical Education session per week. With this bolstered by matches, activities, clubs and extra training (for those playing at county level and above), most children will have about 10 hours of vigorous sporting activity each week.

For a small school, we have an unusually large pool of sporting talent and regularly punch above our weight – the last 6 years has seen us reach 9 IAPS national hockey finals. We are incredibly proud of our sporting achievements: over the last 12 years our children have been awarded 39 sports scholarships to 14 national senior schools.

The children benefit from excellent sporting facilities, centrally located, to provide a fantastic sporting arena. We enjoy a full size astroturf that is used for hockey, cricket, football, touch rugby and tennis. There is a 20 metre outdoor heated swimming pool, a large sports hall that is used for a wide range of sports, a shooting range and a rubber-crumb outdoor multi-sports surface. The school has 4 rugby pitches, 3 netball courts, 4 badminton courts, 5 rounders pitches, 7 tennis courts, an athletics field and a putting lawn. As well as fantastic facilities, pupils also have the opportunity to go on a number of sports tours’ in a variety of sports. The most exciting being the Barcelona Hockey Tour that takes place every two years.

Games and PE are taught by experienced, well-qualified staff, who each have extensive experience playing sport to the highest levels.  We can also arrange specialist one-to-one coaching for individual children in cricket, tennis, hockey, rugby and swimming. When children have individual sporting interests out of school, we make arrangements so as to encourage and foster these pursuits.

We are delighted to announce our new Sports Academies initiative, giving greater access to our professional sports coaches. Both the Luke Caswell Cricket Academy at Beeston and the Tom Fisher Tennis Academy at Beeston will enable children at Beeston to build on the coaching they already receive, including one-to-one performance coaching and sports nutrition advice. Linked to these Sports Academies, two cricket and two tennis scholarships will become available in January 2021 to external applicants.

Director of Sport BSc (Hons), PGCE

I began my teaching career in 2012 at Norwich School, moving to Beeston in 2017, where I now hold the role of Director of Sport. Over the years, I have been fortunate to play a wide range of sports, some to county, regional and national level, each providing me with fantastic experiences and great memories. I believe that sport should be a significant part of every person’s life, so it’s a privilege to be in a position to begin this journey for the children at Beeston.

Fun Fact: I was in the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, dancing alongside Dizzy Rascal, in front of Her Majesty the Queen. (I had to keep it secret for months!)

I love the fact that we do cross country all year round and that we get to run in Roman Camp woods, on the beach, up Beeston Bump and in Sheringham Park. The teachers know all the best runs.
