PHYSICAL EDUCATION

We aim to strike the balance between ‘sport for excellence’ and ‘sport for all’, encouraging a competitive spirit but with a strong emphasis on fair play and team work.  Throughout the year, all pupils – whatever their strengths – will represent Beeston in a team sport.

For a small school, we have an unusually large pool of sporting talent and regularly punch above our weight in girls’ hockey, boys’ hockey, tennis, athletics, sailing and horse riding. The last 6 years has seen us reach 9 IAPS national hockey finals. We are incredibly proud of our sporting achievements: over the last 12 years our children have been awarded 39 sports scholarships to 14 national senior schools.

Being located so close to the sea, lots of children are keen sailors and Beeston has its own fleet of ‘Toppers’ for the children to sail on Wroxham Broads.

The children benefit from excellent sporting facilities, centrally located, to provide a fantastic sporting arena. We enjoy a full size astroturf that is used for hockey, cricket, football, touch rugby and tennis. There is a 20 metre outdoor heated swimming pool, a large sports hall that is used for a wide range of sports, a shooting range and a rubber-crumb outdoor multi-sports surface. The school has 4 rugby pitches, 3 netball courts, 4 badminton courts, 5 rounders pitches, 7 tennis courts, an athletics field and a putting lawn. As well as fantastic facilities, pupils also have the opportunity to go on a number of sports tours’ in a variety of sports. The most exciting being the Barcelona Hockey Tour that takes place every two years.

Games and PE are taught by experienced, well-qualified staff and specialist external coaches who visit the school weekly. Together they support a vast number of teams competing across all age ranges, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally in all the major sports as well as the minor sports. We can also arrange specialist one-to-one coaching for individual children in cricket, tennis and swimming*. When children have individual sporting interests out of school, we encourage them as much as we can to pursue them.

Outstanding sporting potential is generally recognised as early as Year 3 and Sports’ Scholarships are awarded as part of the school’s Scholarship programme and their progress and development are closely monitored as they move through the School.
