01/02: Trip to Norwich Castle

On 21st January Year 3 enjoyed an excellent interactive day at Norwich Castle to investigate the Stone Age.  The children behaved beautifully and were very excited by the whole outing.  On arrival, after a quick hot chocolate and biscuit while overlooking the city, spotting various landmarks from an elevated position and an explanation of the motte and bailey castle we headed for the auditorium.  There George Middleton, our history expert for the day, talked us through the Stone Age and led us through our ‘Digging and Dustbins’ session.  The children were fascinated as layer by layer of history (starting with the Victorians) was unfolded, taking them right back to the Stone Age.  He showed us a rather large mystery object (we eventually worked out that this was a mammoth’s tooth) and there was a chance to look carefully at a number of fascinating artefacts, including flint arrow heads, tools, and food from those times.  The children then had the opportunity to make and decorate their own spear and to draw their own cave painting out of charcoal and chalks.  The morning session was concluded with the reading of a Stone Age story.

After a picnic lunch we were free to explore the museum further.  We looked at lots of different exhibits, including a cast of a bone from the West Runton Mammoth.  Lots of the displays were interactive so we were able to dress up in medieval garb, build our own medieval stone archway and ‘ship’ stone from Normandy to build our own mini-Norwich Castle.  We especially enjoyed exploring the massive Castle Keep, where the children dropped pennies down the well and heard how far they fell.  All that remained was a sneaky peak in a draughty dungeon.

Overall it was a super day and we cannot wait to return to learn more.
