29/01: January Boarding Diary

Weekends at Beeston are busy times for our boarders.  In addition to the huge variety of clubs and activities on offer, there is always an outing or special event to look forward to.

A Masquerade
On Saturday 23rd January, the boarders enjoyed an evening of masquerade, with children and adults embracing the idea with huge enthusiasm.  There were masks of all descriptions from the simplest plain paper to gloriously absurd constructions!  Everyone had made an effort – some more than others to be sure –but nevertheless, the effort was there.  The judging seemed to go on for hours – how do you compare a stag’s head with Simon Cowell or a paper bag with the most gorgeous diamante disguise?
Finally, Maurice Gedney’s homemade Stag was proclaimed the winner.  After supper, it was ‘spot the teacher behind the mask’ competition, with Ed Parker’s table scoring full marks in the shortest time.  Some of the guesses were very interesting indeed!  To complete the evening we all retired to the hall for a ‘big screen’ version of ‘The Mask’ – an hilarious end to a super evening.

Cinema trips
There are always some terrific films in the cinemas at Christmas and New Year and so, on Sunday 24th January, 52 intrepid children and 4 logistically stretched staff(due to 3 different starting and finishing  times and only 2 minibuses) headed off to the Regal Cinema in Cromer to watch Avatar, Sherlock Holmes and St. Trinian’s.   All three films were thoroughly enjoyed and your correspondent was completed stunned by Avatar, which was, quite simply, the most amazing film he had ever seen.  Even more important, perhaps, than the enjoyment, was how well behaved and helpful were all the children.  We will certainly be going again for the next ‘blockbuster’!
